Stop GMO Farming to Save Nutrition
It's not the little shop of horrors. We haven't changed the genetic code of Venus fly traps and accidentally created blood thirsty plants. No, scientists would claim they know what they are doing... which makes me chuckle because many things have changed during the short time I've been around. Could man's arrogance bring our doom?
The fact that many experts suggested most of our genetic code didn't do anything... it was considered junk... to then recognise and continue to discover how nature uses genes and expresses them, just proves how much we do not know. Nevertheless, we are unthinkingly enthusiastic and eager like there's some kind of war we must win, so we "go all in" instead of gently probing to see the outcome.
But there are people starving in Africa
That's awful. Drought and famine continue to plague some areas of the world. We keep giving and yet the problem just will not go away. So we continue to help the best we can. However, there's a solution...
...We can feed the world with smart intervention. By creating plants that produce more food than the original. By making plants hardier and resistant to everything the planet throws at them. It's needed so we can produce enough food to feed the ever increasing world population, right?
Wrong! Just like dropping 1000 bath bombs in the tub, you'd expect an overflow. A mess to mop up. Now, it looks like we have one. Not only do GMOs not produce any more food than organic farming, in fact, organic farming supplies more.[1, 2, 3] The truth is, there has never been a global food shortage. An isolated problem, yes. In any event, we provide almost double the amount that we need. So it seems clear that we have a problem... a distribution problem... a food waste problem.
the risks of GMOs could be affecting us all, one way or another.
Then, the arguments for tampering with nature look floored, don't they? Are we rushing into something we cannot reverse if it all goes terribly wrong? Thankfully, in some areas of the world, the evidence was finally revealed with public backlash helping to carve policy. In the European Union, GMOs are not allowed as human food. UK supermarkets responded to consumer rejection and declared they would only source food that hasn't been tainted by genetic modification. However, that's proving to be increasingly difficult and expensive.
Global GM-farming shows nutritious damage to food chain
In the European Union, we might believe GM food is a problem for the rest of the world and we are protected but stop for a moment, take a second to feel the interconnection that entwines the world together because nature knows no boundaries.
As an illustration, grass pollen does not know if the plant is GM, regular or organically farmed, therefore, wheatgrass can cross-pollinate. GM can contaminate organic crops. Actually, that is what's happened. GM crops didn't stop at their farm's boundaries. Today, across the world, it is increasingly difficult to find none-GMO grains, so we might have enough for our food supply but we are being forced to feed our livestock GM feed. Therefore, the supermarkets are "quietly" allowing GM feed into our food chain, which is not illegal, it was voluntary in the first place.
...there are obvious problems surrounding just who is in charge of certifying the safety for human consumption...
Nevertheless, the risks of GMOs could be affecting us all, one way or another. We Brits may have won the battle many years ago but as we get on with life, global business is forcing GMOs upon the world. Once, before the 50's, all farming could have been considered organic - with a few synthetic fertilisers in the mix - but now we have crops that have had their genome rearranged with bits added from other life forms.
Now, any sane person would believe these new creations would have gone through thorough and rigorous testing to seek approval. That we'd be protected by some kind of authority that demanded independent proof because naturally, there's a conflict of interest involving business and money. And yet, there isn't.
Only after the fact, we begin to feel the impact of GMO farming
The reality is, GMOs have not been in our food supply for a generation yet. Everything previous came by selectively manipulating plants and animals for many generations. For as long as we have been cultivating, we have cross bred related species to reproduce the best. Now we are adding viruses and bacteria, and other bits and bobs to produce something "better" so businesses can control it and sell it along with their chemicals.
For one thing, genetically modified Bt-Corn is registered in the US as a pesticide. It is not classified as a food, and yet it is everywhere in their food chain. Almost all corn based food sold in the US is GMO. And there's currently no labelling for somebody to make a choice. So there are obvious problems surrounding just who is in charge of certifying the safety for human consumption and the hoops it has to jump through.
we are increasingly being warned about the effects of GMO farming and crops could cause to our health
By human design, the corn produces a toxin that kills bugs and this toxin is not believed to be harmful to us. Plus, it is made resistant to herbicides so the farmer can spray chemicals on the crop without killing it, instead just the weeds will die. It sounds great. A smaller chance of losing the crop. But, and there's a big one...
Controlled animal testing produces diseases & tumours
When mice are fed this corn, after a number of years they develop diseases. Conversely, we are told and shown evidence by its creator to prove that there is no risk to human health. Despite this claim, would you want to eat it? I'd rather take guidance from independent scientists. And they are saying GMOs are communicating and combining with us. Plus, GMO material has been found in British meat fibres. It's because farmers can no longer source enough none-GMO feed for their livestock so the supermarkets cannot guarantee meat, milk and eggs will not be contaminated by GMOs. [1, 2]
You see, this is a global issue. GMOs for human consumption might be banned in many countries, nonetheless, a currently unnecessary technology is taking over and finding ways into our food chain. Also, we are increasingly being warned about the...
...Effects GMO Farming & Crops could cause to your Health
Specifically, doctors have for some time questioned why we are seeing such a rise in disease. There are more people than ever developing and suffering from obesity, diabetes, dementia & Alzheimers, Cancers, Crones, IBS, gluten intolerance, leaky gut, and the list goes on. The easy thing to blame is diet and lifestyle... simply, you're eating too much and not doing enough. Although, anyone that has tackled the research knows it is not that simple...
...there are more pieces to the puzzle than eat less and do more. As well as nutrition and exercise, there are toxins too. For instance, these GM foods that have slipped into our supply are made to be toxic to microbes. So when we eat them, they can damage our gut microbiome too. Now the majority of us are aware how influential probiotics are. If we disrupt the good bacteria we can cause lots of miscommunication because our gut plays an important role chatting with our immune system, our brain, producing and influencing hormones... we are like a planet turned inside out... just as we shape this world, bacteria influences us.
The Bt toxin, for example, has been found in 93% of the blood from unborn babies, in breast milk, in urine... it is getting into us. It's not just the GM alterations that are a cause for concern, it's the hundreds of chemicals we're using to kill weeds and bugs so the crop can survive. One, in particular, Glyphosate, a herbicide GMOs are designed to withstand is being used more and more because nature evolves the weeds and they too become resistant to it. So now we have a bioaccumulation of these chemicals on the planet that is not only changing the soil's micro-flora but they are spreading and getting into us too.
As a result, man-made chemicals find their way into places they shouldn't, just like PCBs, that was banned many years ago because of their "unintended impacts on human and environmental health", have found their way to Antarctica. PCBs have been detected in the sperm and milk of Antartic animals. Now, due to excessive use and a build-up, Glyphosate has been seen in us too. It's in our blood, mother breast milk, and we are excreting it. A toxic substance that's considered carcinogenic could be unwillingly flowing around your body.
And with the rise in breast cancer, could this compound be contributing to the disease?
Many experts believe there's an increasing problem the more we use this herbicide, especially for those that are working with it to kill weeds and dry out crops faster. There are growing concerns over its influence and disruption of our hormones, namely estrogens. Plus, the possibility Glyphosate could open the blood brain barrier to let in heavy metals which would be catastrophic. Today, there are links between chemicals disrupting human brains and Autism.
Overall, it is quite clear many do not want GMOs or chemical pesticides and we certainly do not want them forced onto us. So we have to once again make it clear to the supermarkets by reminding them online and in the store. Send them a message, a tweet, a post, and buy organic produce whenever you can. Even if it is meat, eggs, and milk, or simply organic corn or bread. Take a stand and vote with your purse because if it doesn't sell then it will not be on the shelf for long.
