Tiny microbes can affect your body shape - inside and out. So much so that they can be used to help you lose weight, lower cholesterol, strengthen your immune system, and the opposite too. They can make you healthy or if unchecked... unhealthy.

For one thing, the research into our gut bacteria is exploding. Simply because smart people have figured out and proven the relationship between our health and these little germs living with us. In fact, that's the major shift, from the concept of parasites, bugs, and pathogens to probiotics. From ruthlessly serialising and disinfecting to relaxing the 10-second rule.

Anyway, we can see that a diverse population of bacteria benefits health, while a takeover or a diminished culture in your gut could reduce your well-being. So researchers are looking to identify the best bacilli for your health.

Researchers from the Department of Cardiology, Taizhou People's Hospital, Taizhou, China looked at the results of 25 probiotic supplementation randomized human trials and concluded that taking mixed probiotics reduced body weight, especially in overweight adults.[1]

And yet, the bacteria supplements do not have to be alive. In this study, dead or inactive probiotics helped with weight loss.[2]

Afterwards, the researchers from China's Taizhou People's Hospital went on to look at the effect of probiotic Lactobacillus on blood fats. In the end, they found bacteria from Lactobacillus species could significantly reduce Total cholesterol and LDL-Cholesterol. Plus, synbiotic foods (probiotics and prebiotics) can provide beneficial effects on blood triglycerides and HDL-Cholesterol.[3]
